Get Er Done! 3 Success Factors from Larry the Cable Guy

Larry the Cable Guy of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour is famous for saying: “Get Er Done!” And while he might come off as a redneck goofball who doesn’t know much about much, nothing could be further from the truth. He’s a brilliant entrepreneur who can teach us a lot about success.

Here are three success factors Larry the Cable Guy used to Get Er Done and become a huge hit in the comedy world.

Get Er Done — 3 Success Factors from Larry the Cable Guy

Go with what you know. Larry lives and breathes the character he plays mainly because he is no stranger to the material. He grew up on a family farm raising pigs. But that’s just half the story. He also grew up around entertainment. His dad was a guitar player who played with the Everly Brothers and his mom spent her weekends as an Elvis impersonator. Bottom line, Larry knew both country life and entertainment, and this knowledge helped him get er done as a comedian.

Put in the time to refine. I first heard Larry the Cable Guy as a call-in guest on The Kimmer Radio Show in Atlanta. Larry was doing standup in small comedy clubs across the country and would call local radio stations during the day to promote his show. Through these radio appearances, as well as his live show, he refined his comedic persona.

As a bonus, not only did he refine his skills, he also built a huge fan base. He became so good on the radio, he created a buzz even with people who didn’t see him perform live. By the time executives in the entertainment world started noticing him, his fan base was already enormous!

Surround yourself with great people. As you know, Larry has surrounded himself with other successful comedians. He initially became friends with Jeff Foxworthy and later with Bill Engvall. Together they created the Blue Collar Comedy Tour which has become a well-known brand of its own. Larry understands the power behind the famous Jim Rohn quote: “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
