Here are three quick and simple tips that will help you know how to be confident when you don’t know what to say.
How to Be Confident When You Don’t Know What to Say
Tip 1: Don’t Say Anything. This does not mean you stare blankly at the person like a zombie. It means you listen to the person. Really listen. Demonstrate your genuine interest in the other person and what he or she is saying by engaging in active listening.
Tip 2: Restate What You Hear. True active listening will help you know how to be confident when you don’t know what to say because it will actually help you know what to say. Active listening is a communication technique that requires you to give feedback. Basically, you restate or re-paraphrase in your own words what you hear the other person say. This demonstrates that you are following and understanding the other party. It also shows respect and lets the other person know you are interested in him or her.
Tip 3: Ask questions. My favorite technique for how to be confident when you don’t know what to say is to ask questions. Who. What. Why. How. Where. When. These six words are likely the six most stimulating words in a conversation. Additionally, they make you look more confident because confident people ask questions.
Great leaders ask great questions — have you ever wondered why? Do great leaders intentionally develop the art of asking great questions because they know it’s an essential leadership skill, or do people who learn to ask great questions become great leaders? Honestly, the best leaders don’t get tangled up in this debate. They just know asking great questions is a powerful leadership tool.
Additionally, great leaders ask surprising questions. They might start with shallow questions, but they don’t stay there. They wade into asking deep questions that often make team members uncomfortable, at least at first.
