7 Things To Drop ASAP If You Want to Be Happy

Do you want to be happy and experience more joy? Then it is best to let go of a few things. Here are 7 things you can drop that will help you experience more joy and happiness.

7 Things to Drop If You Want to Be Happy

Drop the Worry. Stop worrying about things that are out of your control. Instead, focus on what you can control and take action in those areas.

Drop the Stinking Thinking. Is your mind filled with mindlessness? Mindless TV? Mindless social media? Mindless TikTok videos? When we fill our minds with mindlessness, we develop stinking thinking. If, however, we fill our minds with mind-full resources like Scripture, inspiring books, positive podcasts, and real connections with real people, we replace sticking thinking with stellar thoughts.

Drop the Low-Grade Fuel. Food is more than a tasty treat; it's fuel. Low-grade fuel like simple sugars and processed foods causes our bodies to run poorly and break down more often. Premium fuel like proteins, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats keeps our bodies running smoothly and powerfully. Even more, when we put this premium fuel to work through exercise, we instantly boost our feelings and mood.

Drop the Drama. Don't hang out with Drama Kings or Queens. As Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

Drop the Excess. Most things in moderation are fine. But even good things, taken to the extreme, can be harmful. Therefore, find work you love and work hard, but don't work in excess. Exercise to stay in shape, but don't become an exercise fanatic. Eat healthy, but be careful of being so strict that there is no joy in a delightful meal.

Drop the Yes. Want to guarantee your unhappiness? Then say “yes” to everything! If, instead, you want to be happier, take control of your life and learn how to say “no.”

Drop the Comparison. You cannot be happy if you constantly compare yourself with others. You are you and have been blessed with gifts and abilities that are unique to you. Embracing this truth and becoming the best you that you can be leads to a much more fulfilling and joyful life.

PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE: As a bonus, I'd like to share something personal. When our children were young, Kathy and I helped them memorize Proverbs 17:22 which says, “A happy (joyful) heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” We talked about this verse often with our kids when they were younger. In fact, as a family, we look back and laugh about the time when one of our girls was upset about something, and our son encouraged her to have a happy heart so that her bones wouldn't dry up. As the years have gone by and our family has talked about Scripture and spiritual things, each of us has realized that God loves us and has a purpose for our lives. Discovering who He is and what He has done for us is what has led to our greatest joy. With this as background, while I know this website is about personal and professional development, I just want to take this moment to recognize that for me, nothing has contributed to my growth as a person and professional more than understanding this reality.
