How to Break Free from Mediocrity

Does your life feel routine and monotonous? You wake up, brush your teeth, eat breakfast, head out the door to battle rush-hour traffic, stare at your computer, sit in meetings, scarf down lunch, sit in more meetings, stare at your computer some more, fight rush-hour traffic again, eat dinner, plop down in front of the TV, fall asleep, and then do it all over again the next day.

Here’s the real danger in the scenario above…when you allow life to become routine and monotonous, you can easily slip into mediocrity. And once you accept mediocrity, you fall prey to a vicious trap that keeps you from living it forward into your best life.

So the question is: How do you live it forward and break free from mediocrity so that you can experience your best life? The following 3 steps should help.

3 Steps to Break Free from Mediocrity

See great things. You get what you expect in life. I know, this sounds a bit cheesy, but it’s true! The reason? Your expectations shape your vision. This means if you expect life to be monotonous and mediocre, you will see monotony and mediocrity everywhere you look. However, if you expect exciting and positive opportunities, you will see exciting and positive opportunities everywhere, even in the midst of challenges and struggles.

Ask great questions. Since honest, self-evaluation is a major key to success, it’s important to ask yourself on a regular basis how you’re doing. And don’t be content with: “I’m fine.” Mediocrity and complacency are kissing cousins, yet both can be disguised as contentment. Contentment is good because it usually means you’re grateful and happy. Mediocrity and complacency are definitely not good because it usually a sign of laziness and not living up to your potential. All this to say, be sure to go deeper with your self-evaluation. Ask yourself: “Am I truly content or am I actually complacent?”

Take great actions. The Bible says, “Faith without action is dead” (James 2:17). Guess what? A person who says he wants to break free from mediocrity but refuses to take action is dead as well. As the saying goes, “A one hundred mile journey begins with just a single step.” If you want to live your best life, then live it forward every day by taking one step of action in the direction you want to go.
