You Can Achieve Your Goals IF...

As mentioned in a previous post, you CAN move from DREAM to DO and achieve your goals. I absolutely believe this is true!

For one, I have personally experienced this reality, and my journey hasn’t been easy. But even more, I’ve met dozens of people who have experienced greater challenges than me who are achieving their goals as well.

Bottom line, no matter what you’ve faced, it’s still possible to achieve your goals. While the past pages of your story have already been written, the ink for future chapters is still in your pen. This means you CAN live it forward into your best life and calling!

With that said, there are several big IFs to your success equation. In the previous post, I shared four big-picture IFs. In this post, I’ll focus on a few practical IFs.

You Can Achieve Your Goals IF

Most of life is lived in what I like to call the Arena of the Mundane. In other words, while your goals create your DREAM, seeing your dream become reality requires you to DO mundane tasks day-in and day-out. This is what it means to move from DREAM to DO, and here are a few steps to help you make it happen.

First, commit to moving from DREAM to DO! Some people get stuck dreaming about their best life and calling for years. Others… decades. Yes, there is a time to dream, but if you spend too much time dreaming, your dreams are bound to drift towards fantasy instead of reality. If you want to achieve your goals and live your dreams, the first step is to commit to doing them!

Second, develop a solid PLAN. This step will help you move your goals out of fantasy-land into reality. When developing your plan, make sure to:

  • Determine specific DO steps. Take your vision—the place you want to end up—and work backwards. In other words, start with the end in mind and then walk backwards to figure out what DO steps are required to get there. Never forget that big-picture visions are achieved in small, DOABLE steps.
  • Develop a timeline. Achieving big goals often takes two or three times longer than you anticipate. So why am I suggesting that you develop a timeline if it’s likely to be inaccurate? Because developing a timeline pushes you to get moving. Even if your plan takes longer than expected, at least you know where you’re going and you’re tracking your progress. Plus, you’ll likely learn lessons along the way that will help you develop more accurate timelines for future goals.
  • Evaluate your progress. Don’t get so busy working your plan that you don’t take time to make sure you’re still following your plan. Take time out, at least every few weeks, to review your plan and tweak it as needed.
  • Party! That’s right… when you accomplish your plan, celebrate! You’ve earned it.

Third, tell ALLIES what you’re doing. I say this cautiously, of course. Don’t tell “wet blankets” because they will only dampen your spirits. But do tell those who believe in you. Not just “yes” people, but people who are positive, who want you to succeed, who will encourage you along the way, and who will say the tough things that you need to hear. These people are invaluable in helping you move from DREAM to DO and achieve your goals. (As a side note, if you want to attract these kinds of people, BE ONE OF THESE PEOPLE.)

Finally, GET MOVING! There is no time like the present to start. If you are committed to moving from DREAM to DO, if you have a PLAN, and if you have positive ALLIES in your corner… what are you waiting for? Take your first step today!
