As you start a new year, you’ll receive a lot of advice on how to be successful. Set goals. Organize your schedule. Eat less. Exercise more. These kinds of thoughts on success are helpful, but when shared all at once at the beginning of another year, they can feel overwhelming.

If you’re feeling weighed down by all the thoughts on success being piled on your plate at the start of this new year, here’s a simple idea to put everything into perspective. It’s a thought that will inspire you to get the most out of each and every day.

The Sunshine of Today

Don’t let the clouds of yesterday
or the fog of tomorrow
cast a shadow on the sunshine of today.

—Kent Julian—

Yeah, I know, my little statement may sound a bit trite. People may even accuse you, as they have me, of shallow optimism or simplistic thinking. And yes, it looks like something you’d see on an Instagram quote picture. (Personal confession here…I like Instagram quote pictures.)

However, if you look closely, you’ll see there is a lot of power in this simple statement. It’s about focusing on the one day that matters most: today! Since today is the only day in which you can live and take action, doesn’t it make sense that you embrace today with expectancy and positivity? Let go of your regrets about the past and stop worrying so much about your concerns for the future. Be present and live into the sunshine of today.

Live It Forward Today

So as you start another year, I encourage you to embrace all the great advice on success that comes your way. Review the past. Set new goals. Make the necessary changes for a better future. Yet don’t let all these thoughts on success crowd out the importance of being present today. Don’t get caught staring back at your past or getting lost in your dreams of the future, take action and live it forward today.

Question: What is one thing you can do to focus more on today than on your past or your future?
