Organizing the Important

There are many ways to organize your time and focus.

But most of us, myself included, often make the mistake of prioritizing URGENT things over important things.

Why is this?

It's because urgent things cry out the loudest.

They whine more often.

They push and shove their way to the top of our minds.

And if those tactics don't work, they stomp their feet and scream, “LOOK AT ME!”

Yet, organizing for the IMPORTANT rather than the urgent is far more effective.

So why is this so hard to do?

Because the important rarely whines.

The important seldom shoves or pushes its way to the top.

And the important only raises its voice when it's too late and the opportunity has already passed us by.

Yet, as Stephen Covey said, if you want to be effective, “The key is not to prioritize what's on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities.”

Organizing the Important

So, here's an idea…

Today, instead of starting with the urgent, spend your first hour on what's important.

Tomorrow…do it again.

Then repeat this the next day and the next day and the next day.

Before you know it, you'll look back and realize you are organizing the important.
