Yes, I am a motivational speaker. And yes, I say that with pride.
The reason I am proud to say I am a motivational speaker is because there are two categories of motivational speakers.
The first category is the content-weak motivational speaker
This keynote speaker fills his or her presentation with lots of slogans and cheesy cliché. Empty advice that sound smooth but has no value.
- If you can believe it, you can achieve it.
- Whenever you see the word “impossible,” think “I’m possible.”
- If the mind can conceive it, the heart can achieve it.
These phrases are not good or bad. They are just phrases. But if left to stand alone, they are empty phrases that have no value. How does a person move from believing to achieving? What must a person do to think “I’m possible” instead of “impossible?” What steps must someone take to achieve what he or she conceives? Answering these questions adds value and solid content, but just making the statements add nothing.
The second category is the content-rich motivational speaker
Obviously, this is the category I strive to achieve!
If you want to know how to be a motivational speaker who is also content-rich, you can’t just add great content to you presentation. That’s a good start, but you need to go a step further. You must deliver your great content in an unforgettable way. Making your content unforgettable is what makes it so motivational!
All this to say, when I come across a great presentation that is both content-rich and motivational, I love to share it. That’s why I’m sharing the video below.
But I also have two more reasons for sharing it. First, how to be a motivational speaker who delivers great content in an unforgettable way is what we teach through Speak It Forward, so I’m always looking for great examples like this one to highlight there. Second, to know me is to know I’m a huge Georgia Tech fan and Nick Selby makes all Yellow Jackets fans proud!
